A Guide To Giallo on DVD: NoShame

Thursday, 12 February 2015

In my last "Guide To Giallo" post I talked about Shameless Screen Entertainment, an active UK label who have had multiple releases in the past few years. The great thing about Shameless and similar labels are that they make it easy and inexpensive to get your hands on gialli. Unfortunately, it's not always as easy as popping into a shop and loading up your basket with Italian genre cinema. Sadly, many distributors of gialli and Italian cult cinema have gone out of business and as a result its pushed up demand for their deleted catalogues making obtaining those out of print films a bit of a nightmare. Furthermore, trying to actually find what films were released on what label can be a tricky business without any sort of official website to act as a guide. So I hope to unmuddy those waters by listing all the gialli (and Italian cult films) released on those now defunct labels. The best place to obtain said films is on eBay or Amazon but be prepared to fork out some cash for the more hard to come by titles. For the stuff you're really keen to get hold of, save the search on eBay and see what prices your desired titles tend to go for.

So I couldn't talk about defunct cult cinema labels without talking about my favourite - NoShame. NoShame released so many great cult Italian films, putting a great lot of care and detail into their releases. NoShame were originally based in Italy but expanded to the US obtaining a headquarters in LA a year after trading. The majority of NoShame's catalogue was made up of poliziotteschis but they also released gialli, sex comedies and more high brow Italian drama films from the 40s, 50s and 60s including some of Sophia Loren's notable works. Despite many of their releases being obscure genre films, they were often treated to a lavish release with amulets, figurines, thick booklets and postcards included with the DVDs. Most of NoShame's releases came with a host of special features that comprised of original and informative documentaries and interviews. NoShame went out of business in 2006 but fortunately some of their titles have been re-released under MYA. Hopefully MYA and other cult labels decide to pick up some of NoShame's past releases. I would particularly like to see Luciano Ercoli's Death Walks films re-released as the NoShame release goes for over £70 online and I'd like fellow fans to be able to get them at an affordable price.
